Banda has been recognized for being a strong advocate for women and girls’ emancipation and empowerment and as a prominent civil rights campaigner.

In a related development, Banda has been invited to join Council of Women World Leaders, an alliance with the United Nations Foundation.

Former President Banda has since accepted to join the council. Almost all current women Presidents and Prime Ministers are members. Dalia Grybauskaite, the President of Lithuania, is the current chair.

In her invitation letter, Grybauskaite writes that as women leaders of the world, they were were proud of Banda for serving as the leader of her country.

“Your leadership and service was an example and inspiration to women around the world to take their rightful place,” reads the invitation letter, which is copied to Laura Liswood, Secretary General, Council of Women World Leaders

Reads the letter: “As newly elected chair, I write to invite you to become a member of the Council of Women World Leaders. We look forward to hearing from you and wish you the greatest success in your current and future endeavors!  We would appreciate a confirmation of your acceptance of this invitation”.

The Council of Women World Leaders is a network of current and former women prime ministers and presidents established in 1996 by Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, President of Iceland (1980-1996) and first woman in the world to be democratically elected president, Mary Robinson, President of Ireland (1990-1997) and Laura Liswood, Secretary General.

Through its networks, summits, ministerial initiative, partnerships, fellows, and programs, the Council promotes good governance and gender equality, and enhances the experience of democracy globally by increasing the number, effectiveness, and visibility of women who lead their countries.

The Council’s goal is to use the symbolic importance of women leaders and the substantive experience of its members to support women’s full participation and representation in the political process at the highest levels, and future women leaders

The Council is hosted at the UN Foundation.

Before becoming Malawi’s Head of State in 2012, Banda served as a Member of Parliament, Minister of Gender and Child Welfare, and Foreign Minister and Vice President of the Republic of Malawi.

She has been instrumental in the formation of such organizations as the African Federation of Women Entrepreneurs, the Council for the Economic Empowerment of Women in Africa, and the American and African Business Women’s Alliance, of which she served as first President. Banda’s mission in life is to empower women and youth through business and education.

  1. Truly we really have to honoured as a country for what JB is doing, thus putting our country on the world map. For those that are disgusted, yhoo you really need to use your common sense. Abiti keep on raising the flag of malawi, we are behind you.

  2. Truth be told, this woman has now become a pet of the west, who are parading her like a circus animal all over the globe. its now disgusting to hear all the accolades they are bestowing upon her

  5. As a Malawian who is civilised, congrats JB. Whether u are cashgater or not only God knows but u are rightfully rewarded no doubt about. Don’t mind hardcore DPP bad comments which fulfil Michael Sauka prophecy of envy since it is only our national anthem that has nsanje ndi matenda & on that am not a Malawian since ndilibe nsanje. JB did not cling to power as Muluzi did & didn’t rig elections as Pitala did brought UK foresic auditors which Bingu didn’t on 92 billion that gives her a high standing globally. Do expect Peter to receive Nobel Prize? Then it will be Master of Corruption & Lomweism MHC HOUSES SCANDAL, Midnight six, midnight government, midnight Daniel Bingu Phiri, midnight cabinet & midnight invitation. Ndiye amene anapangikisa Bingu kuvunda when his will states that should live 100 yrs. SHAME!

  7. JB ndi more..! Her leadership is well positioned in the World nt fit for a small Mlakho country like this.. this province can only fit the Mlakho boy who fails even to unite us all..

  10. In JB the country lost very good opportunity. Here is a woman who has shown utmost love for her country. I can say with confidence that she is the only flag carrier around. She truly putting us on the map. As a citizen of malawi im so proud of you madam Joyce Banda.

  11. JB is woman of substance. In watever she is touching its turning into gold. May the good Lord be with you as you take your careee outside state house to the next level.

  12. Iwe no 3. Ndiwe olodzedwa. Chipanda mai ako kukusunga mmimba for 9 months bwezi ukulemba zopusazo. Chonsecho u cannot do without mesho. Shupit. Osamanyoza amai. Kukhuta eti.

  13. It’s all Hot Air. Feminism propaganda in USA. And people of reason in USA hate this. Using Jb from poor country.

  14. Jb’s background is a clear testimony that she is a strong and successful woman. I feel pity for kaliati who’s been spitting fire about this woman but what she forgets is that JB is way up above her. Jb has a rich, admirable backgroung while kaliati popularity was hyped by her big loud mouth and all the nosense that comes out of it. The next time that woman talks about Jb should ask herself the reason why bingu had to choose Jb to second him leaving her despite all that section 65 war she fought. Jb is an achiever and her future keeps on brightening. Haters gonna hate, but nothing will stop Jb from progressing, she is a social welfare activist and this is innate, you can not take it away from her. Kaliati must get a life or you gonna keep on detesting while Jb shines
