The Malawi leader said when she came to power in April, 2012 as the first woman President in Malawi, it was only proper to appoint Justice Msosa as Chief Justice not only because she was a woman, but also because she happened to be the most senior in the system and well qualified.

“When I look back, I believe that it was the will of God that come 2012, Malawi would have, for the first time, a woman President and a woman Chief Justice,” said President Banda.

She said as Malawi enters into the next 50 years, her government, through the transformation agenda, would mobilize special funds to ensure that the judiciary was well supported and that justice, equity and fairness were achieved.

Recounting the life story of the Chief Justice, Solicitor General Janet Banda, said Chief Justice Anastasia Msosa had carried herself successfully through the judicial system ladders and that she was a model and an inspiration to all female judges.

“Throughout her career Msosa has been a pioneer in a number of key offices. She started as a state legal advocate in 1975 and she later became the first woman Chief Legal Aid Advocate, before she rose to the first woman Registrar General from 1990 – 92,” Banda explained.

The Solicitor General further re-called that Chief Justice Msosa was the first woman Judge at the High Court and later, first woman Justice of Appeal in the country.

Msosa was also the Chairperson of the first ever Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) and she successfully presided over the first ever democratic elections in the country in 1994.

As a family woman, Msosa, married to retired accountant, Andrew Msosa, together have successfully educated their seven children to enviable levels, according to the Solicitor General.

“Chief Justice Anastasia Msosa, SC, is a great career woman and a phenomenal mother, humble and God fearing, whom we all aspire to emulate,” said Solicitor General Banda.

Invited delegates at the fundraising dinner included officials from the corporate world, the judiciary, government and diplomatic corps and the proceeds from the dinner will be used to support the needy, according to the organizers.
