President Joyce Banda has planned to stage a mass political rally on Friday at the historic Njamba Freedom Park in Malawi’s commercial hub, Blantyre on Friday after presentation of her nomination papers to seek her mandate as the country Head of State in tough May 20 polls.

Banda, who has kept her running mate choice a closely-guarded secret, will be the last of all candidates to file her nomination papers.

Presidential Press Secretary Steven Nhlane said on Tuesday in a statement that after “her Presidential Nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission at 9.00 am and thereafter conduct a Development rally at Njamba Freedom Park in Blantyre.”

President Banda will also use the rally to promote her People’s Party (PP) manifesto, which she unveiled last Sunday.

Banda described her manifesto as the beginning of a transformational agenda the PP wants to implement.

The Malawi leader said PP’s election manifesto highlights policies and programmes which include a transformation agenda that places integrated rural development as a centrepiece of development agenda.

Banda also said PP is prepared to improve people’s welfare in areas of food security, education, health and others.

Meanwhile, Banda is confident she will win the May election by a wide margin, according to her spokesman.

Nhlane told Voice of America radio on Tuesday that Banda “ is very confident that she will win the election with a landslide” .
