Malawi Police in Phalombe district on Friday arrested a 48 year-old man for allegedly beating his wife to death.
According to police, the man, identified as Ganizani Salondwa beat his wife Esther Salimu 26, to death with a wooden brick mould (Chikombole) on suspicion that she was cheating on him.
Pholombe police publicist, Augustus Nkhwazi told Nyasa Times they managed to apprehend Salondwa with help of the community members.
”On Thursday the suspect went out for a drink and upon returning home at around 16 hours, he did not find his wife as she had gone to her mother’s house within the village,” explained Nkhwazi.
He added: ”This did not please the suspect as he jealously suspected his wife was having an affair with another man.”
When the wife returned home, she found her husband furious, and he started beating her with a wooden brick mould.
People tried to intervene but were threatened by the suspect. They later managed to overpower him.
”She was unconscious at the time they rushed her to Kalinde Health Centre, and was however pronounced dead upon arrival.”
Salimu is said to have died due to severe head injuries.
Salondwa is expected to appear in court soon to answer charges of murder under Section 209 of the Penal Code.
