Joyce Banda stops Mzomera, Kondowe’s expulsion: PP summons the two
President and founder of opposition Peoples Party (PP), Joyce Banda has reversed the party’s decision to expell two provincial chairpersons, Reverend Christopher Mzomera Ngwira and Cliffer Kondowe.
The party through its Secretary General, Ibrahim Matola on Saturday expelled Mzomera and Kondowe from the party over alleged misconduct after the two led a group of thugs to disrupt a meeting Matola had organized in the northern region in preparation for the return of Banda.
However, the decision to expell the two didn’t go well with Banda who has since ordered the party to rescind the decision and summon the two for disciplinary hearing.
According to a letter signed by Matola dated September 6, 2015, which Nyasa Times has sourced, the party has reversed its decision and the two are no longer expelled but suspended pending disciplinary hearing.
”Dear Hon Christopher Mzomera Ngwira, Please refer to the letter you received on your expulsion. The party President HE Dr. Joyce Banda has directed that inspite of the seriousness of the misconduct; you are suspended and not expelled in order to be given an opportunity to be heard,” reads the letter in part.
”You are therefore being invited to appear before the party disciplinary subcommittee on Friday 11th September, 2015; 10am at Maranatha Lodge, Area 47 near Bwandilo, in Lilongwe”.
The party on Saturday gave Mzomera and Kondowe seven days to hand over all party materials in their possession including vehicles.
Mzomera is the party’s northern province Chairperson while Kondwe was Provincial Chairlady.
According to letters Nyasa Times sourced, Mzomera and Kondowe were accused of causing ‘confusion’ in the party.
Mzomera is said to have threatened party officials from other regions not to hold party meetings in the north or else there will be bloodshed.
He is also reported to have refused to appear before the party’s disciplinary committee several times over his sentiments that Khumbo Kachali is the party’s interim leader.
Mzomera confirmed to Nyasa Times that they indeed disrupted the meeting, saying he is in charge of the party in the north and maintained that Khumbo Kachali is acting leader.
“I am taking orders from Khumbo Kachali, he is the acting leader of PP,” said Mzomera.
Kachali is said to have bankrolled controversial Mzomera to pay thugs to disrupt the meeting, but he dismissed the allegations.
The expulsion of Mzomera and Kondowe came days after the party suspended its Director of Administration, Reverend Peter Kaleso for indiscipline.
Kaleso has been replaced by Ken Msonda on acting capacity while waiting to appear before the party’s disciplinary committee.
