Spokesperson of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Jessies Kabwila says she suspects President Peter Mutharika’s party cadres are behind the burning of her car on Wednesday evening.
Kabwila says DPP cadets accused her of sponsoring Chancellor College demonstrations. She denies having a hand in that.
“It is the DPP cadets involved,” Kabwila said.
“Blaming it on MCP is utterly wrong,” the Salima North West Member of Parliament (MP)said.
In an interview, Kabwila said she went into hiding on Monday and Tuesday after she was tipped by well wishers that she was to be killed by DPP operatives because she was allegedly sponsoring protests at Chancellor College.
“They were literally hunting for me but I have nothing to do with the protests,” she said.
She said the DPP thugs threw a petrol bomb on the driver’s seat side of the Fortuner vehicle, burning it to ashes at Lilongwe Golf Club.
She doubted the police would investigate the matter, saying they might be connected to the matter.
In another interview, Information minister Patricia Kaliati said the Chancellor College protests were sponsored by former President Joyce Banda.
“We know who went to South Africa to get the money, we know who bought the beers for the students, we know who bought them chamba to smoke so that they could be violent,” said Kaliati.
Meanwhile the court has released the three student leaders along with others.
The student leaders have been charged with inciting violence whilst the other students have been charged with conduct likely to cause breach of peace and unlawful assembly.
In a statement, the University of Malawi Council blamed the student leaders for the violent protests.
The council says the whole thing was carefully planned to maximise damage and politicians were involved.
The students blocked the convoy of US vice preSident second lady Jill Biden in Zomba, forcing her to cancel her engagements in Zomba and Machinga and sought refuge at the dilapidted Zomba Eastern region police headquarters along with US ambassador to Malawi Virginia Palmer and Education minister Virginia Palmer, which was an embarrassment to Malawi government.
