Kabwila claims KadzIpatike arrest is a political hit on MCP’s legal chief

A full‑blown political firestorm has erupted after Malawi Congress Party  (MCP) legal director and MP George Kadzipatike was detained in what party heavyweights are calling a “deliberate, targeted operation”.

Senior MCP figures and a large bloc of MPs descended on Area 3 Police Station, blasting authorities and demanding answers over what they insist is no routine tax matter.

MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila was more direct still in her criticism, unleashing a blistering attack on authorities and claiming  Kadzipatike was “deliberately targeted” because of his role as the party’s director of legal affairs — and his long record of defending MCP members in high‑stakes court battles.

Her remarks ignited a political storm as Leader of the Opposition Simplex Chithyola Banda led a dramatic procession of senior MCP officials to Lilongwe’s Area 3 Police Station.

Chithyola Banda said the visit was meant to “give him courage”, describing Kadzipatike’s detention as “stressful and unnecessary”.

He openly questioned why a tax dispute had escalated into a police arrest, insisting such matters are normally resolved through negotiation.

He accused authorities of misplaced priorities, urging government to focus on the daily struggles facing Malawians instead of “heavy‑handed theatrics.”

But it was the sheer scale of the MCP turnout that sent shockwaves through political circles.

Director of campaign Moses Kunkuyu, deputy treasurer general Jacob Hara, and a long list of MPs — Emmanuel Chambulanyina Jere, Joshua Malango, Owen Malijani, Anthony Masamba, Arnold Kadzanja, Kelvin Mphande, Arthur Sungitsa, Mphatso Boti, Pilirani Buleya — packed the police station grounds in a show of unity rarely seen in Malawian politics.

To insiders, the message was unmistakable: MCP believes Kadzipatike’s arrest is political — not procedural.

The detention comes just days after a dramatic dual raid on his law offices in Lilongwe and Mzuzu, where more than 20 police and Malawi Revenue Authority officers seized files and computers belonging to five lawyers.

MCP officials say the timing, scale and intensity of the operation raise serious questions about motive.
