Kaliati insists Nigeria doctored Mutharika’s photo

Malawi’s flashy Minister of Information and Civic Education Patricia Kaliati has alleged the photograph that appeared on the Nigerian State House official website showing that country’s leader Goodluck Jonathan welcoming his Malawian counterpart Bingu wa Mutharika in Abuja was doctored.

President Mutharika silently sneaked out of the country on Tuesday morning without announcing his destination raising suspicions among Malawians about the mission of his foreign trip.

After Nyasa Times exclusively broke the news of the trip Tuesday, government authorities tried to cover it up claiming Mutharika was at State House until Nyasa Timescame with another report of his arrival in the oil rich West African nation.

But despite being a known fact that Mutharika flew out to Nigeria, Kaliati, who is government spokesperson, insisted Thursday that in as far as she was concerned the president never travelled out of the country.

Queried about the photograph which appeared on Nigeria’s State House official website, and has been republished in various media outlets, Kaliati said she had not seen the photograph and believes it was doctored.

“You know very well what people can do with the photographs, it is not something new so the same must have happened with the picture you are talking about,” she alleged without further elaboration.

Added Kaliati: “Unless I get information that indeed our president was in Nigeria, what I can tell you is that the president went no where, he was at State House working.”

The Nigerian Government is yet to comment on the issue and Malawians are anxiously waiting to hear the kind of reaction following Kaliati allegations.

Meanwhile, while unconfirmed reports indicate Mutharika travelled to Nigeria to discuss with Jonathan supply of fuel to the country, fresh speculations indicate that the Malawi leader flew there to privately meet renowned TV prophet Temitope Balogun Joshua, aka TB Joshua.

The reports say Mutharika privately met TB Joshua following the shocking prophesy of the death of an African ageing leader which he made during his Sunday live service early this month and many people swiftly linked the news to the Malawian leader who is 79 years old.

TB Joshua, the leader of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) based in Nigeria, commands a large following in Nigeria and beyond and most of his prophecies have come to pass.

Mutharika returned from Nigeria Wednesday afternoon through Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe weirdly using the cargo terminal with no traditional fanfare that characterizes the airport whenever he is leaving the country or arriving.
