Kalindo gives govt one week ultimatum over Malawi’s deepening crisis

Firebrand activist Bon Kalindo has given the government just one week to explain what it is doing to tackle Malawi’s mounting economic and social woes, warning that nationwide protests will follow if no answers are forthcoming.

‘Explain the Suffering!’ Kalindo Gives Government Seven Days to Tackle Fuel, Food and Corruption Crisis or Face Protests

Speaking at a press conference in Lilongwe on Thursday, the Malawi First leader demanded immediate action and accountability over allegations of corruption, chronic fuel shortages, food scarcity and the worsening economic hardships facing ordinary Malawians.

Kalindo said the government could no longer remain silent while citizens continue to struggle to access basic necessities.

“The government must provide answers within one week because people are facing fuel and food shortages across the country,” he declared.

In a further challenge to authorities, Kalindo called for the convening of a Mid-Term Budget Review, arguing that Malawians have a right to know how the country’s finances are being managed amid the ongoing crisis.

His remarks come at a politically sensitive time, with President Peter Mutharika currently in South Africa on a private visit.

The ultimatum also follows the government’s controversial decision to cancel the Mid-Term Budget Review meeting, saying the funds earmarked for the exercise would instead be redirected towards fuel procurement and addressing the impact of the El Niño-induced challenges.

With public frustration growing over the cost of living and shortages of essential commodities, Kalindo’s warning raises the prospect of fresh demonstrations should the government fail to respond within the seven-day deadline.
