Kalindo halts cost-of-living protests after govt talks

Pressure group Malawi First has suspended nationwide protests that had been scheduled for 5 November, following talks with Government representatives.

Malawi First Calls Off Cost-of-Living Protests After Kalindo Talks With Government

The organisation, led by outspoken activist Bon Kalindo, had threatened demonstrations unless authorities acted swiftly to address soaring public concerns over food shortages, persistent blackouts, water supply problems and the shortage of foreign currency.

Last week, Kalindo handed the government a seven-day ultimatum, demanding urgent action on the crisis and calling for toll gate fees, currently set at K2,000, to be reduced.

Responding to the demands, Justice Minister Charles Mhango said the government would engage with the concerns and provide a formal response within two weeks.

Mhango also sought to reassure Malawians that some of the challenges could be resolved quickly, while others would require more time and longer-term solutions.

The decision to shelve the protests offers a temporary reprieve for the government as it comes under mounting pressure over the rising cost of living and worsening public services.
