Kalirani brothers murder uncle in Dowa, arrested

Happy and Hastings Kalirani of Dowa are spending their days in the cooler on allegations that they murdered their uncle, Jamison Tsitsi, Sunday night.

According to Mponela police publicist Kondwani Kandiado, Tsitsi, 52, was accused of setting on fire a house belonging to Rabison Kalirani – brother to the suspects.

“When the suspects [Hastings and Happy] were trying to put of the fire so that they rescue their brother and children, they were surprised to see the deceased [Tsitsi] running away from the scene,” explained Kandiado.

He added: “They concluded that he was the one who was behind the arson. They started chasing him and caught him within a shouting distance before beating him to unconsciousness.”

According to Kandiado, Tsitsi was pronounced dead on arrival at Mponela Rural Hospital.

The two are expected to answer murder charges soon.

Meanwhile, police are also looking for a third suspect, Alick Kalirani, who is on the run.

Both Happy 19, and Hastings Kalirani 24, hails from Tobwinja Village in the area of T/A Mponela in Dowa district.
