Kamlepo says Malawi multiparty democracy looted

Member of Parliament for Rumphi East Kamlepo Kalua has bemoaned the declining standards of Malawi’s democratic values a scenario he said has helped retard national development since the inception of multiparty democracy.

Kamlepo: It seems we have abandoned the needs of the people as leaders are focused on wrongful  enrichment

Kalua made the remarks in an interview on the side-lines of an orientation training organized for newly elected Members of Parliament in Lilongwe.

His comments comes at a time the country is commemorating June 14 as Freedom Day where citizens—amid threats, whips, property forfeiture and killings—braved the seasons and voted  NO to continued Malawi Congress Party (MCP)  31-year-ruleof ‘death and darkness’, to use the late Chakufwa Chihana’s catchphrase.

Kalua, who has just been re-elected Rumphi East MP for the second time, expressed disappointment at what is happening in the political arena in the country, saying the multiparty democratic values in Malawi were being looted.

“It seems we have abandoned the needs of the people and instead put in place policies that will benefit a few individuals,” Kalua lamented.

The Rumphi East Legislator said policies that advocate for the benefit of individuals are the ones destroying the future of this country.

Kamlepo said some people have misunderstood multiparty democracy by thinking that it is a promotion of certain tribes or regions.

On this point Kalua denounced politics of regionalism and tribalism in the country calling upon all Malawians practicing it to graduate to nationalism and patriotism so that the country fully benefits from the various development initiatives multiparty democracy brings.

He then warned Malawians to tread with care if Malawi is to be at par development wise with its neighbouring countries.

Commenting on politics of regionalism, Mathews Ngwale, a just elected Independent Member of Parliament for Chiradzulu East said political parties in Malawi have failed to become national parties.

“Political parties are comfortable to be where they are known to be strong as such they tend to be regionalistic rather than nationalistic,” Ngwale said in a separate interview.

He said political parties need to invest in marketing their parties in areas they are not visible if they to attain the national status.

First and formost, you were made to involve your constituents so that they comprehend what is democracy. You said that MALAWI’S multiparty democracy has been looted yes Mr.Kamlepo you are right Mr.Kamlepo, since you were voted into Paliament what have you done to help people of Rumphi constituency and yet,Rumhi is the poorest CONSTITUENCY IN OUR COUNTRY and if late Dr.Simphawaka Nkwazi was still alive, the RUMPHI CONSTITUENY… Read more »

You have used a very wrong angle I guess, what Mr Kalua has said here is almost 100% true from this angle where I am.

I entirely agree with the sentiments raised by Kalua and Nangwale. However, I would like to point out that when it comes to policies, a good proportion of them are generated or given a go ahead through the legislature of which MPs play a pivotal role. The chief problem in my view is that we have a crop of MPs and politicians in general who grossly lack integrity, not people oriented and are 100% geared towards self enrichment. And this being the case , we have noted that good Bills are voted out in parliament for example electoral reforms Bill… Read more »

There is nothing new in your ranting Mr. Malia. In fact you are a party to the looting. How did you vote on the 50+1 bill?

Just to inform fellow Malawians of goodwill that all will be well. We have all signed original tally sheets and MEC must explain where they got the fake announced results. We also have audios of Ansah telling officials of her wish to have APMelected as president at all cost. In this age of technology Ansah should have been more careful since there are whatsapp messages implicating her, MEC and DPP officials. We also have evidence of monies given out as bribes.

Kamlepa Kalawa (Channel Africa) has a very valid point. Ine ndiye sindimaonapo the real value of Democracy in Malawi and I wonder why it was so much touted during the one party era. Those who opposed Kamuzu then (likes of Bakili) or claimed to have been exiled by him (APM) have tested the mantles of power under democracy and failed miserably to uplift the country. They are no better than the fallen leader. Kugawanika mitundu, nepotism and cronyism are at their best under the so called democratic era. Human rights abuses, kumakhala cheu cheu polankhula kuti kodi DPP cadet ali… Read more »

Wise words from Kalua peoples interest first the others follows, that is why others have failed this time, greed, people these days are able to judge and keep everything in their mind waiting for appropriate time to act just like what has just recently happen. Some politicians were promising cakes forgetting that this is not Malawi of Yesterday. Believe if this scenario continues it will be very very difficult for MCP UTM to win elections in future, mark underline my words. Because of what is happening there is no order in towns, flow of cash is also another issue because… Read more »
