Kamuzu Academy celebrates 31st anniversary: JB tips students to write their vision
President Joyce Banda has advised students of glamorous Kamuzu Academy to write down their vision statements so that they attain their goals.
The Malawi leader was speaking at the “Founders Day” where she was the guest honor at its campus in Kasungu in recognition of the institution’s establishment 31 years ago that was founded by, and named after, the late Hastings Kamuzu Banda, the founding President.
“I was a bit late with my vision statement, I wrote mine at the age of 29,” said President Banda.
She said her vision in life is to assist women and the youth to succeed in business and education.
Kamuzu Academy
President Banda described the academy as the shining star of education in Malawi.
She said it was pleasing to note that both the trustees and the teachers have over the years embraced the vision of the late Kamuzu Banda by adhering to high standards and discipline.
Banda said at thirty one years, the academy has been a constant presence that has witnessed some of Malawi’s most significant milestones.
President Banda said she was glad to note that in the past two years, the academy has sent as total of 409 students to University of Malawi’s College of Medicine alone.
Champion of Education
President Banda said there is need for the country to do more on education. She reminded the people that the reason Kamuzu built the academy is that people should not travel outside in search of great education.
Banda said she had been a champion of education since her close friend in secondary school failed to go to school due to lack of school fees.
President Banda told the gathering that she then started searching for solution. She set up her own foundation to help educate young girls and women who could not afford education.
Orchestra
President Banda said she was particularly entertained by the Academy Orchestra that performed during the function.
The Malawi leader whose father was a music director in the Malawi Police Service could be seen nodding her head as the orchestra played.
She later toured the School’s Library, Mathematics room and science laboratory.
Also attending the function was former official hostess to Kamuzu, Mama Cecilia Kadzamira.
According to Kadzamira, the late Kamuzu “had a vision that Malawi should have better education.”
