Kamwendo scoops ‘player of the month’ in Malawi Super League

Rejuvenated Mighty Wanderers midfield dynamo, Joseph ‘Shakira’ Kamwendo was named player of the month  for being outstanding in  June.

The enterprising player received the accolade on Sunday, July 23, 2012 during Wanderers’ r 3-2 defeat in the hands of Civo United at the Civo Stadium in Lilongwe.

The former Orlando Pirates genius received K15, 000 from the sponsors, Telekom Networks Malawi  (TNM).

Nomads star Joseph Kamwendo with the club's fans

Kamwendo  inspired Wandered to beat rivals Bullets 2-1 in the TNM Super League, as he scored the winning goal for the Nomads.

The player, who hails from Kamwendo Village in Mchinji district,  also played an important role in boosting morale among his fellow players, when the chips were down.

Delighted ‘Shakira’

Speaking with Nyasa Times, Kamwendo said that he was delighted with the recognition and vowed to work more extra hard during the next games.

“First of all, let me thank God, my fans, fellow players and all Wanderers supporters. This is not a one man show because we work as a team. I will not stop from here because we still have more games ahead of us,” said Kamwendo.

Kamwendo also assured the Nomads family not to lose heart with their team’s poor show over the weekend when they were pruned 3-2 to Civo United on Saturday before being clipped 1-0 to Kamuzu Barracks in the capital city.

“No need to press the panic button because we still have more games to wrap up the season. All what l can urge them is to continue supporting us and we promise to recover,” said Kamwendo.

The Nomads next game is on this coming Saturday, as they are scheduled to tussle with their rivals, Big Bullets to mark the launching ceremony of the Carlsberg sponsorship.

The Nomads will be basking with confidence having beaten the People’s team in their last meeting 2-1 at the same venue.

However, if the current form is anything to go by, then Big Bullets can start cerebrating because on paper they are favourites.

The People’s team managed to cruise through into the finals of the Presidential Cup after beating the likes of Silver Strikers and Escom United and their players are on fire.
