Kanyalika faces Mussa in Zomba central DPP primaries
There is a lot of anticipation from Zomba residents for the hot contest for the seat of Zomba Central Constituency in the primaries for Malawi opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) scheduled for Zomba Gymkhana Club on Thursday, Boxing Day.
Incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) Yunus Mussa comes face to face with businessperson George Kanyalika in what some people have described as one of the toughest contest for the constituency.
There has been talk from the Kanyalika camp that Mussa spent most of his time in the Capital City during the late Bingu era starving his constituents from participatory development projects.
However, Mussa’s personal assistant Edward Kandidziwa said the primaries are just one of the pillars for democracy to prevail.
“It is true that Yunus [Mussa] will contest in primaries with [George] Kanyalika on Thursday. But this is just one of the things in democracy because chances are 75 percent for Yunus to win the primaries. It is just a matter of letting democracy take its course,” he said in an interview with Nyasa Times.
Nonetheless, the mood ahead of the primaries seems to captivate the eagerly awaiting constituents who at long last will have a choice to vote for the candidate who is development conscious.
“We have tried some but now time has come for us to get on track and have somebody who has the will to develop this constituency,” said one of the DPP followers in Zomba.
