Karonga DC kicked out of office by irate workers
Controversy has hit Karonga District Council in the north of Malawi as irate workers on Thursday brutally booted out the District Commissioner (DC) Rosemary Moyo and other two officials for their failure to perform their duties in the district.
Hundreds of workers who stormed the DC’s office threatened mob justice if the three officials will report for duties.
Chairperson for Karonga Council workers Union, Bentry Chihana, said that employees are “fed up” with the behaviour of the DC, including the Human Resource Manager Alick Milimbo and Monitoring and Evaluation Officer Emmanuel Sohaya.
According to Chihana, many petitions have been submitted to the DC’s office citing the problems that the workers are facing but there has been inaction.
DC Moyo is accused of delaying to pay salaries to the workers, water and electricity bills, nepotism and questionable staff rotation.
“We don’t need the District Commissioner and her two friends Milimbo and Sohaya in Karonga because they have failed to run the council. We have been patient for a long time giving them petitions even being on round table discussions expressing our concerns but we have seen no change,” said Chihana.
Adding that “this is the fourth month we have not received our salaries and as am speaking in all government offices, rest houses, bars and restraints there is no water and electricity; how can things run in such condition? That is why we are saying they have failed to run the district the only thing is for them to leave the premises and the doors will still be closed till new staff come in.”
The Regional Council Workers Union Director Suzgani Kayira backed the Karonga council workers saying “we cannot blame these people because we also petitioned the DC.”
DC Moyo said accepted the demands to abdicate her office.
“I have no problem with their demand. If the people are forcing me out of this district, why I should be here?” said Moyo who was escorted home by police.
Meanwhile, the Karonga district council chair person Patrick Kishombe has called for the emergency meeting Friday.

The problem should not be the DC alone. The directors too should feel as being part of the problem. They are the ones who advise her. They have also failed. Especially the so called DOF. He is rude to people. He delays payments of allowances. Kaya chimakhala chani kaya. Mwina poti allowance yake imakhala kuti palibe. Bvuto limayamba anthuwa akakonda kumadzikundikira ndi ndrama, kuyiwala ntchito ndi anthu

Kodi wa Neno mukuchedwelanji kumutsekela office ndi kumuthamangitsa! Azikamwa mowa ndi mamuna wake Monteiro! Komanso azikavulira ma bwana ake ku Capital Hill! She is waste of space. No wonder Neno sizatukuka! Kutumiza mwana mmodzi ku Secondary School boma lonse! Shame!
Just k bow that this has happened because there is Kyungu behind this mess. Kyungu is becoming the president of the republic of Karonga. He must be trimmed to size.. This chief claims the DHO is ineffecient, education Manager is inefficient, DADO is inefficitent now who is better?
Let the government reduce his powers to size.
Kyungu is abusing resources with his endless trips. No one (including the so called irate employees ) raises objections to his abuse of resources. Why don’t they stand up and challenge him.
The Dc and her two officers are just scapegoats. They should face chief Kyungu who sleeps and eats in expensive hotels and sends bills to the Dc to pay.
I saw this coming… bravo Ngondes, this lady was so careless in handling sensitive matters. This was dead wood.
These are the results of compromising standards in district administration by hiring every Jim and Jack. Gone were the days when district administration was accorded the highest executive respect and honour. The department of Administrative and Political Studies at Chancellor college should carry out a research on the effects of these political appointments on district administration since the multiparty dispensation.
