Karonga Stadium welcome development  — MP Mwenifumbo

Member of Parliament for Karonga Central Constituency Frank Mwenifumbo (Aford)  has lauded government for the construction of Karonga Stadium saying it will boost the district council’s revenue base.

Speaking in an interview following the stadium’s inaugural football match between Chitipa United and Be Forward Wanderers which bagged over K5 million in gate collections, Mwenifumbo said the facility will spur economic development of the district.

The TNM Super League game attracted many football spectators from within the country and neighboring Tanzania and Zambia.

“I thank government; we need such colorful developments in the country. It [the stadium] is for the community and as a Member of Parliament who encourages development, I’m excited.

“The stadium will encourage unity among Malawians. For the first time, Be Forward Wanderers, all the way from Blantyre, is here; this means we will be gathering and interacting more as Malawian citizens,” Mwenifumbo said.

He then asked Karonga residents to be responsible and take care of the facility.

“The community should take the stadium as theirs because the government has given us it is ours now. We do not expect any person to vandalize the facility or steal poles, wires, and other equipment,” he said.

The first ever super league game to be played in Karonga ended in a goalless draw.

Chitipa United will now be using the new stadium as their home ground, a shift from Mzuzu Stadium which posed logistical challenges to the team due to long distance from their base.

  1. A stadium looking like a Nigerian Kraa. Build all seater modern stadiums in all districts that will contribute to the development of football in Malawi.
Even with 10000 capacity, as along as they are modern, we will all appreciate football facilities that have quality standards and are modern. Politicians should remember that districts’ headquarters are capitals of those districts and deserve modern facilities.

Nothing to celebrate or give credit to such bad looking structures. They are all of the same design in all districts they have been constructed. This explains how cheap-minded the DPP leadership is and to what poor level it wants to take Malawi’s development.

You can not build a good and modern stadium with less than 5 million dollars. It is better to build one or two modern stadiums with a 10 million dollar investment at a time than building several poor or ugly looking ones in the name of bringing sports development to districts. Rome wasn’t built in one day. Such a stadium initiative can be effected in phases spanning several years, say 10 to 15years as long as the country puts up quality modern structures that will be appreciated by both locals and foreigners.

The problem with DPP government is that they do things for future campaign in elections even if compromising quality of what is constructed. When one looks at city roads constructed so far, he/she will observe that they leave a lot to be desired – poor poor poor quality.

  2. Its the DPP govt Bro Mwenefumbo. The one you attack every time you are in Parliament. Its doing things and for the record we will see our Zomba Stadium soon. Mulanje stadium is being enjoyed by our friends Lomwe friends, Mangochi Stadium by Yao people, just to mention a few. Is this not a development oriented Govt. When you spell out your words in that house its like you are not benefiting from Govt. That money will give the city council so many capabilities if utilized well. Do we need English people to tell our district councils how to make money here? We have our own English Peter Muthalika, giving out to many regardless of so much criticism. Just few months coming black outs will reduce coz of generators. Pamenepo bwanji. Kumaonako zina zabwino mwa munthu osamangokhalira kunyoza. Zikoma Bro Mwenefumbo waonako ichi chokha, and I hope you will also see the technical College, Ngala.

  3. It’s laughable that an MP can praise such a poorly constructed stadium. That is the problem of people born in Malawi, raised in Malawi and don’t travel. Start traveling and you will appreciate good things and become aware how backward we are.
Malawi is an opportunity to construct good structures.

  4. i agree with Tumpale, about unity , football unites people- Karonga stand for one people and one nation, keep safe the facility as we are waiting for yet another atadium in Chitipa.
