Karonga woman dumps baby into Lake Malawi, arrested

Eluby Kamwera, 22, of Karonga is in police custody allegedly for dumping her newly born baby into Lake Malawi  and  is alleged to have been dating two men at Makunganya Village, T/A Mwirang`ombe in Karonga, police have confirmed.

Karonga police publicist Enock Rivason said  one of the men promised to marry Kamwera, but she got pregnant by the other man who had no intentions of marrying her. The man that got her pregnant refused to marry her after she gave birth.

Rivason told Nyasa Times Tuesday that Kamwera was being held to answer murder charges.

“The incident happened at Makunganya Village of Traditional Authority Mwirang’ombe in Karonga. The girl secretly delivered the baby herself before throwing the infant into the lake.

“The district main hospital has confirmed the death of the baby and she is being held for murder charges,” explained Rivasoni.

But sources privy to Nyasa Times say Kamwera dumped the baby upon hearing that her husband, who was in South Africa, was returning home.

“She was apparently impregnated by a boyfriend whilst the man who everyone knows is supposed to marry her was away. When news reached her that her fiance was coming she decided to get rid of the baby,” our source said.

Kamwera hails from Makeye Village, Traditional Authority Mwenemisuku in Chitipa district.
