Karonga’s Kyungu elevated to Paramount Chief

Malawi President Joyce Banda has elevated the most senior chief in Chitipa and Karonga, Kyungu to the Paramount Chief status.

This was announced by the President when she met over 200 chiefs in Blantyre on Wednesday.

Kyungu has not been in good books with the late Bingu wa Mutharika government, which shunned his installation.

But President Banda said she has elevated her to Paramount Chief.

Paramount Chief Kyungu of Karonga

“Chief Kyungu is now Paramount Chief Kyungu,” announced President Banda.

Born on September 4, 1944, Chief Kyungu – Nsangalufu Clement Kapote Mwakasungula – holds a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities and Master of Arts in International Relations and Diplomacy. He was at some point Malawi’s Deputy Ambassador to Namibia and Mutharika’s personal assistant on NGO affairs.

President Banda also asked the Yao chiefs to meet and select who should be their Paramount Chief, pledging to fund their meeting even if the venue will be Nkopola Lodge in the lakeshore resort.

She pledged to respect the chiefs all the way.
