Kasambara detained, survives assassination attempt
A prominent human rights lawyer Ralph Kasamabra on Monday was detained by police in commercial city, Blantyre after surviving an assasination attempt .
Kasambara, former Attorney General, was being held at Blantyre Police Station according to Blantyre Police publicist Beatrice Mwachande.
Mwachande told Nyasa Times that Kasambara was being questioned by the police and that he had not been arrested.
She however said the matter will be left in the hands for courts for trial, saying Kasambara and his security detail will be prosecuted.
But Kasambara said he was under arrest, calling it politically motivated and vindictive.
Apart from being a lawyer, Kasambara is also a political activist and president of file party, Congress for Democrats (Code).
He said Police are accusing him of assault when he had to defend himself from an attack by suspected regime thugs at his office on Monday afternoon.
The thugs were baying for his blood.
“I was attacked by thugs at my offices and with my security detail we overpowered them. We could not take the law in our hands and handed them to police,” said Kasambara.
Kasambara denies accusations of assaulting the thugs but rather said he was in self defence from an attack.
The lawyer, one of the finest in the country, claimed the thugs mentioned ruling Democratic Progress Party (DPP) officials as being masterminders of the assassination attack.
“One of the thugs has revealed that senior DPP officials organised the attack. The State House has also been linked,” said Kasambara.
The lawyer said the thugs had a petrol bomb and disclosed they mentioned a Mr Chisale of State House who helped them in the operation.
He claimed the revelations were on record, after he had recorded them.
“I am not subscribing to the Bible’s Job 18-18. They wanted to kill me. I can do no other. Let it be,” said Kasambara
Presidential spokesman Hetherwick Ntaba has swiftly refuted that State House or DPP could not be connected to the aborted terror.
