Kasambara whisked to Mwaiwathu hospital, brother’s house attacked

High Court registry in the old capital city, Zomba has ordered the release on bail of former Malawi Attorney General, Ralph Kasambara, who was arrested on Monday after intercepting a gang of sponsored thugs, allegedly sent to petrol-bomb his office,.

Lawyer Wapona Kita – from Kasambara’s law firm, Ralph and Arnolds – said they sought an injunction from the High Court to have Kasambara freed.

Justice Godfrey Mwase, granted the bail but police and prison officials could not comply.

Kasambara: Unwell

“The High Court in Zomba has granted an injunction for the immediate release of Ralph Kasambara,” Kita wrote on his Facebook page.

“We are working to have the Court Order signed anytime soon,” he added.

Magistrate Innocent Nebi already released Kasambara, a leading lawyer in private practice, on a 20,000 Malawi kwacha (slightly over US$ 120) and that he must be reporting to the Blantyre Police Station every Friday but the government disobeyed the court order.

His arrest has been described as politically motivated, coming after hard-hitting interviews with the press, where he called for the impeachment of the President.

Meanwhile, Kasambara has a medical emergency after complaining of heart attack in his death row cell at Zomba Maximum Prison.

“I am not fit and well,” Kasambara told a Nyasa Times reporter who visited him during the day.

Spotting a South African Bafana Bafana gold and green jersey, the human rights lawyer said he had a heart condition.

Kasambara said his doctor visited him and told him that he needed his medicine for the heart problem.

He fears his condition will deteriorate if he fails to take his medicine.

And in the evening Kasambara was whisked to Mwaiwathu Hospital in the city of Blantyre, about 60 kilometres, with an escort of over 30 police officers armed –to-teech after a health scare.

“We have just arrived at Mwaiwathu Hospital with Ralph Kasambara, according to the doctors, he has developed a serious cardiac condition and needs constant observation,” Kita updated his Facebook status.

“He is out of the prison hands but still in police hands, and had an escort of about 30 police officers.”

Elsewhere, regime thugs have attacked the home of Kasambara’s brother in Lilongwe.
