Khato says Simbi facing character assassination from DPP
Khato Civils (Pty) Limited executive chairperson Simbi Phiri has spoken to Nyasa Times that he was not arrested and says he has been tipped by a top governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) that they have launched a campaign of character assassination on him.
The South Africa-based Simbi Phiri parried out reports of his arrest as part of DPP campaign to antagonise him following attacks that he allegedly financed the opposition to bribe High Court judges.
Simbi’s firm was awarded the contract for Lake Malawi Water Supply Project, designed to pump and deliver 50 million litres of potable water from Salima to Lilongwe City every day.
Khato Civils chief executive officer Mongezi Mnyasi also said in a statement that the reports of Simbi’s arrests are “totally untrue and malicious” intended to bring into disrepute the good character of Simbi and his firm.
“We are convinced that the fabrications are emanating from unprofessional conduct by some rogue elements within Malawi who are hell bent on turnishing our good image and reputation of Mr Simbi Phiri,” said Mnyasi.
The Khato boss said there are individuals who have “uterior motives to scandalise and bring Khato Civils name into disrepute.”
The statement further states that there are “key leading politicians” and officials within Malawi “who for some reason don’t like Khato Civils and they will do everything possible to discredit us.”
Nyasa Times story has since been retracted and unreservedly apologised to Mr Simbi Phiri.
“We carried the story of Mr Simbi Phiri’s arrest that has been proved to be untrue and malicious. The story has been retracted and we have apologised to Mr Phiri and Khato Civils,” said Edgar Chibaka, Managing Director.

Khatho is in for a big fight with politicians. For his information Malawians are smart at that game and he will come out bruised. For starters the dude wanted to dupe us with his exaggerated USD500 m water project. The guy had wanted to take money from his fellow cinmen and mortgage Malawi. In the DPP the minister of finance is smarter and sniffed such treachery.

If it was cheap to bring water from Salima to Lilongwe Kamuzu Banda, Bakili Mulizi or Joyce could have done it. The complexity of engineering to pump water of over a kilometer up hill is not a child play. This is not a bridge in Thyolo. This is reverse Engineering where everything is not in simple algorithms. The issue of Khato Civils was not publicised by DPP. There is a clip circulating of Khato Civil being investigated in RSA by the Government in connection with the construction of something to do with water supply to Rular Villages in Polokwane, Giyani. eNC NEWS and casters and Reporters were on the ground Reporting about the issue

Reference to the eNCA News clip is an attempt to resuscitate a dead horse. There’s no case here. People should watch the entire clip on YouTube. The SIU has been to Giyani to inspect the work done by Khato Civils. Their conclusion is that Khato Civils delivered good quality work and the money paid to the company was accounted for. The City Press journalist on the clip admitted that Khato Civils delivered on what they were appointed for and the quality of work is good. It’s pathetic that people who have not even been to Giyani to see the work done by Khato Civils are commenting on this issue. Your attempt to discredit Mr Simbi Phiri will not succeed.

The clip on eNCA News is over a year old. There was a misunderstanding of Khato Civils’ scope on the Giyani project. The scope was bulk water supply, not reticulation. It did not include connecting water to people’s houses. Government officials, including the minister of water affairs, have inspected Khato Civils’ work on this project. Their conclusion was that every Rand paid to Khato Civils was accounted for. So, Mr Simbi Phiri has not committed any fraud. There are no grounds for him to be arrested. Please stop misleading people.

How has Mr Simbi Phiri defrauded the South African government? The project has been audited by independent auditors. They have not found any fraud. Why should anyone listen to you? Have you been to Giyani, to determine if Khato Civils delivered what it was appointed for? Were you part of the investigating team? Have you seen evidence of fraud? Where is the evidence to back up what you are saying? The question raised by South African media is about how LTE was awarded the Giyani project. Khato Civils was appointed as a subcontractor on the Giyani water project. Processes followed by the department of water affairs in appointing LTE have nothing to do with Khato Civils. I tend to agree with the assertion that it is the dpp machinery which is peddling these lies, in particular Maravipost website. They even have an article on their website dated 24 March 2020 followed by an old video clip of Cathy Mohlahlana as anchor when she was still at ENCA…she left ENCA early last year and joined Newroom Africa (channel 405 of dstv) on 2 May 2019. Therefore this is old news and there is nothing new. Maravipost is a dpp propaganda machination…all news articles reflect the dpp government in good light and the opposition and everyone who criticize the government in bad light.
