Khumbo file nominations for MP, cools running mate issue
Malawi Vice President Khumbo Hastings Kachali presented his nomination papers for the Mzimba South West constituency saying it is necessary for politicians to get backing from home before they vie for national positions.
“I am happy that I have presented my nomination papers and it’s vital that politicians get backing from their people. Without that they cannot get very far,” he told Nyasa Times after filing his papers.
Kachali, who was accompanied by his wife and a few ruling People’s Party (PP) supporters, evaded the question of what type of national position he will be going for.

“You know I will be Vice President up to May 20th, 2014,” he said.
Kachali said he is confident of clinching back the seat.
“I am a good campaigner and there is no way I can lose. I will work hard to ensure that President Dr Joyce Banda winning the presidency,” he said.
Kachali has however been challenged by Raymond Nkhata, the only Member of Parliament (MP) to have won a seat on PP ticket, who has declared that he will challenge the Vice-President in the race for the Mzimba South West Constituency seat as an independent candidate.
Nkhata succeeded Kachali in an October 2012 by-election after Kachali lost the parliamentary seat by virtue of his appointment as Vice-President.
