Khumbo Kachale takes over PP presidency: ‘Rebirth will begin with North Malawi’

Former vice-president Khumbo Kachale has been installed at interim president of Peoples Party (PP) at Mzuzu Victory Temple after its founding leader and former Head of State Joyce Banda has been outside the country for almost a year.

Kachali was sidelined by Banda during the elections last year when she picked Sosten Gwengwe as her running mate in the presidential polls which she lost. Kachale then went to on to endorse Banda’s main contender and successor Peter Mutharika and his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

Gwengwe has since dumped PP and joined Malawi Congress Party (MCP) with many ditching the former ruling party.

After a meeting at Mzuzu Victory Temple, PP regional governor Mzomera Ngwira announced that Kachali has been chosen as its interim president.

He said PP is reorganising to restore its lost glory and Kachali will lead it “from the frontline”

“PP’s executive has settled for Kachale to bridge the gap left by Banda’s lengthy stay outside Malawi,” said Mzomera.

“KK will lead from the front line,” said Mzomera. “Kachali will be captain of the ship.”

Mzomera said Banda is aware of PP plans to rebuild with Kachali on the throne

“We’ll not wait for the Centre or South to lift our party. The rebirth will begin with northerners who accept the party,” said Mzomera.

He stressed that the North cannot continue birthing new parties every poll year, declaring: “We will stand by PP.”

Kachali said he is pleased to lead PP and assured that he will take it to the centre ground of politics in Malawi.

“We will rebuild and make PP a force to reckon with,” said Kachali.

A conviction politician who is highly regarded in the north, Kachali said the future of Malawi is “bright in orange with a strong People’s Party.”

  4. Atumbuka all your parties are dead. Aford is dead. PP is dead too. Matola, Change Goal and Ralph Jooma have not been picked for the post because they are not Tumbukas. PP has made another mistake of picking Kachale as it did during elections by picking the baby seater Gwengwe.

  21. It’s not true that PP will rebuild from the north. What has Khumbo Kachale done for the north. It’s this tendency to brand a party as a regional club that brings tribalism. I’m still waiting for a party that will run a clean, policy based campaign and appeal to all regions. I haven’t heard anything sensible from Khumbo or Mzomera here. Uzeleza pela!
