Khwauli’s sacking from Malawi cabinet excites opposition AFORD

The Alliance for Democracy (Aford) hope that Khwauli Msiska, who has just been fired as deputy minister for economic planning, will now have more time for the party.

Msiska is the party’s current general secretary and was drafted into President Banda’s all-inclusive cabinet last year alongside the party’s national chair, Enoch Chihana, who is the minister of Sports and Youth Development.

Malawi daily, The Nation reported Wednesday that the party’s publicity secretary Dan Msowoya hailed the Malawi leader for sacking Msiska saying he was not active and the party was dormant.

“I think this is good for the party because as secretary general, he was not as active as people expected. In general, the party was dormant,” Msowoya is quoted as saying.

Responding to Msowoya’s sentiments, Msiska said he did not apply for the job and the President only exercised her prerogative.

Monday’s Cabinet reshuffle saw the firing of Agriculture and Food Security minister Professor Peter Mwanza, Irrigation and Water Development minister Richie Muheya and Environment and Climate Change Management minister Jennifer Chilunga.

Also removed were deputy minister for Transport and Public Works Chimango Mughogho and her counterpart at the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development Augustine Mtendere.
