Kossam’s bid for refrees hot seat backfires

Former Central Region Referees Committee (CRRC) general secretary Oscar Kossam’s bid to oust his boss Williams Chikontha from the hot seat of chairman backfired badly, when the outgoing GS got trounced by 63 to 30 votes during the committee’s AGM held at Baptist Theological Seminary in Lilongwe over the weekend.

Kossam was serving as general secretary in the previous CRRC administration headed by Chikontha but his lust for the hot seat saw him completely out of the committee after losing to the Lilongwe Technical College IT tutor.

Wright Nkwezalamba won the position of vice chairman after beating three challengers- Fifa referee Jones Makuwira, Vincent Gunde and Charles Nangantani. Nkwezalamba received 52 votes against 52 for Makuwira, four for Gunde and a single vote for Nangantani.

Fifa referee Duncan Lengani got the position of general secretary unopposed with Fifa assistant referee Innocent Kaundula elected as his vice. Kaundula overwhelmed former Fifa referee Simon Jovinala with 76 votes against 12.

The post of treasurer went to John Mhone who will be deputized by Salima based Edward Kambatuwa.

Zondwayo Siwombo, Aggrey Phiri, Patrick Ngoleka and Jane Silungwe went in as executive committee members.

In his acceptance speech, Chikontha hailed the referees for entrusting him with another four-year term, pledging to work towards improving the well-being of the men in black.

“One of my major challenges is to see to it that upgrading of referees is done in good time. It has been taking long for our referees to be upgraded and this has been discouraging the match officials,” said Chikontha.
