Kyungu’s stance on death crimes way to go

Paramount Chief Kyungu’s recent announcement that he has formed a commission to handle proliferating death crimes as well as witchcraft cases in Karonga district is a development not only commendable but also one that needs to be emulated by other chiefs country over.editorial op

That death crimes as well as witchcraft cases have reached unimaginable levels in the country is no longer far-fetched. Innocent people continue to be butchered like animals in our communities on unfounded allegations that they are into the witchcraft thing, among others. Hardly a month passes these days before a murder, courtesy of mob justice, is heard.

The formation of the commission is, therefore, a very welcome development.

As Kyungu rightly pointed out, we hope the commission will stamp deep rooted strategies that will protect innocent people from dying for nothing.

We at Nyasa Times further hope that this ‘peace and security commission’ will work indeed work hand in hand with the police and all concerned stakeholders; and, that trivial tribal affiliations will not jeopardize this otherwise noble cause.

We hope that other senior leaders will embrace the same, and establish such structures in their respective areas for it is them that are closer to people at the grassroots than any other individuals or institutions we may know or think of.

Nyasa Times’ commendation for the establishment of the so-called commission by the chief vindicates how ignorant journals at this media house are on the establishments and workings of the commissions. Commissions are supposed to be established by the state and not by a chief. Underwhich powers is this chief establishing this commission? And under which powers that commission will be functioning? Akuluakulu, our govt might run by failures and psychopaths but handing it over to chiefs is the waste thing we will do in this country

Mr Mirella, I can perceive a twitch of knowledge about establishment of commissions. As you have put it, the government as opposed to any other authority is responsible for the task. Do you mind to shade more light for my sake?
