Latest excuse from Escom on prolonged power blackouts

State power distributors, Escom has now blamed strong winds and thunderstorms for the latest episodes of power cuts which has left some areas without power for nearly 24 hours.

Chitosi: Freak weather affecting power

Escom public relations officer Innocent Chitosi has conceded some areas have to go without electricity for 24 hours and heaped the blame on nature.

“Power is being affected by thunderstorms and heavy winds which are destroying our property and negatively impacting on the distribution of power,” he said.

The most affected districts are Nsanje, Chikhwawa and Thyolo.

But Chitosi said Escom is working around the clock to maintain the power equipment so that electricity is restored as soon as possible.

Most parts of the country are having nine hours of power cuts every day including the capital, Lilongwe and commercial city, Blantyre impacting negatively on production and the economy.

Government hired power generators at US$78000 to complement the generation of power but they are staying idle after K2.8 billion worth of fuel to power the generators was dubiously stolen.

Indeed there are many excuses from ESCOM on power deficiencies but, ladies and gentleman, heavy winds and storms can create havoc on power lines. We have heard and seen stormy winds destroying power lines such as in the USA. Malawi is not an exception.

ESCOM is not lying here.

Excuses, excuses, excuses! Shameful. What next? ESCOM has gone beyond a joke. This is the 21st century. When is our beloved Malawi going to catch up? We are literally in the dark ages. As long as this situation persists, the country will never move forward.

There is need for executive departure to pave way for new people with new ideas, if these people really loved and really cared for their country. But because they care for their bellies, Malawi will remain in this condition.
