Lightening kills two children in Malawi

Lightning killed two children and injured four, injuring some children in Malawi’s central district of Ntcheu on Monday, police said.

The lightening struck the house in Masunda 2 village in the area of traditional authority Phambala in Ntcheu.

Ntcheu Police Public Relations Officer, Laston Chapansi identified the deceased as Eglena Sajiwa, 15, and Thokozani Sajiwa, 9.

“The two died on the spot, but the other two children, Christopher Junior and Chimwemwe were rushed to Senzani Health Centre where they were treated as out-patients,” said Chapansi.

Chapansi said both parents of the children were away from their home during the incident.

Eglena was in Form 3 at Likudzi Community Day Secondary School and Thokozani was a Standard 6 learner at Masunda Primary School.

Lightning kills scores of Malawians during the rainy season here which starts from October to April.

Over 85 households in Ntcheu have been rendered homeless after hail storm destroyed their houses since rainy season started.—(Additional reporting by George Bulombola, Malawi News Agency)
