Lightning kills girl 12, man found floating dead in Mzimba

A  girl died after being struck by lightning at Mughogho village in the area of Inkosi Kampingo Sibande in Malawi’s northern district of Mzimba.

Mzimba police spokesperson constable Gabriel Chiona identified the deceased as Loveness Mguntha aged 12 who met her fate when lightning struck in the evening on Friday.

“The mother and her three children were inside their house while it was raining outside and all of a sudden lighening struck the house resulting into the death of the little girl”, said Chiona

He said following the incident the girl was left with burns on the face , chest and on left leg and was rushed to Chikangawa health center where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

“We visited the scene in the company of medics and it was proved that she died of due to severe burns and shock.

The incident comes barely days after the police pulled un identified man found dead and floating at Ehleleni river in the area of Inkosi Mzikubola in the district

“We are also  registering a high rate of suicide cases in our districts ,in just two weeks three people have hanged themselves which is worrying”, said constable Chiona.

He implored people in the district to avoid ending their lives prematurely saying they should report their grievances at the numerous victim support units.
