Lightning strike five people from same family in Salima

A lighting strike has hit a group of five people from the same family in central region lakeshore district of Salima injuring them all, Malawi Police has confirmed.

Police officials indicate that  the victims are admitted at Salima District Hospital after being hit by lightening on the morning of January 25.

Salima Police Public Relations Officer, Gift Chitowe, said the incident happened during the rains which started at 09:00 hours till late.

“On the said date rains started falling at about 0900 hours that was mixed of thunders and lightening and at that particular time the family of Mai Solofina Katsabola was quietely enjoying their  lunch on the veranda of her house and all over a sudden lightening stuck some of the 5 family members who fainted and were rushed to Salima District Hospital,” said Chitowe.

The five have been identified as Solofina Katsabola 58, Rabson Kambwiri 33, Benjamin Kambwiri 29, Never Estamu 23 and Limbikani Chisonga 35 all from Chimombo Village T/A Kalonga District Salima.” Said Chitowe.

No information on their condition is so far available.

Chitowe has since advised members not to stand by the trees to avoid the incidents of that nature.

“Let advise the general public that during rainfall nobody should stand under trees, lean on electrical poles, stand on the door ways and cross rivers to avoid such incidences happening now and again.”
