Lilongwe Council corruption affects ordinary people in city north

Constituents in Lilongwe city north are blaming corruption at city council level which has led to wash away of culverts just soon after they were constructed, making roads impassable.

Chafunya: Council would provide cement once money is available

Councillor for Kalanbula ward in Lumbadzi, Bonwell Phiri said the culverts were constructed without cement because Lilongwe City Council did not provide even a single bag of cement.

Spokesperson for Lilongwe City Council Tamara Chafunya confirmed the council failed to provide cement due to financial problems.

She however said the council would provide the cement once money is available.

This comes days after the graft busting body, the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) nabbed two more people for allegedly swindling millions of government funds at Mangochi District Council.

The two are Cyprian Kagwira, a businessman and Shadreck Chibondo Banda, councillor for Mvumba ward in Mangochi West constituency.

Egritta Ndala, senior publicist for ACB says in a statement that senior officers at the council had been drawing hefty night allowances for trips which were never undertaken.

Earlier this month, ACB arrested Mwanza district commissioner Jack Ngulube for alleged involvement in fraudulent activities when he was DC for Mangochi.

Ngulube was arrested alongside procurement officer Michael Khoko and businessman Malison Mpiwu.
