A group of councillors are working on plans to unseat Lilongwe City Mayor WillieChapondera.
According to information sourced from Lilongwe council chamber, councillors are not happy with the performance of their Mayor.
“We are not doing this for the sake of politics but our Mayor is almost passive and not active,” said one of the councillors.
“Six months there has been no meaningful developmental project. You can compare yourself with what is happening in Blantyre. Blantyre city Mayor Noel Chalamanda is doing quite a good job than our own Chapondela,” said another councillor.
Another councillor added his voice: “Look what is happening now garbage are almost all over, street lights are all gone, roads in the city are in poor state.”
Just recently, 13 Malawi Congress Party ward councillors complained to their president Dr Lazarus Chakwera that the Mayor is sidelining them.
The Mayor is a member of ruling DPP.
But when contacted Chapondera trashed the claims that he is not doing anything on development, saying the Mayor do not carry development works but committees.
Chapondera said the committees are supposed to be active and bring their development ideas to the council for discussions in the chamber.
“Mayor do not dictate development anywhere even in USA it does not go like that. Yes it is true that street lights are not working, potholes are there in our roads but what have they done as committees, are they waiting for me to go and fix street lights? “said Chapondera.
