Lilongwe mob lynch two thieves, injure one

Irate community members of Chiudzira Township in the area of TA Tsabango in Lilongwe on Saturday killed two suspected thieves and seriously injured another as they attempted to steal from one of the houses.

The two deceased alleged thieves, only identified as Maxwell Band and Isaac, wanted to steal from the house of 30-year-old Chimwemwe Lambulira together with their accomplice Richard Zoputa.

Zoputa is currently battling for his life at Kamuzu Central Hospital after he sustained serious injuries from heavy pounding by the angry residents.

Street justice

According to eye witnesses, upon reaching Lambulira’s house, the three first tied the guard with a rope and then broke into the house. Lambulira is a sales person for TNM airtime scratch cards.

“But the house owner sensed danger and quickly fled using the back window. He then raised and mobilized his neighbours who responded instantly and caught the robbers in action,” said one eye witness.

Two of the robbers reportedly died on the spot while Zoputa was terribly knocked before some well wishers rescued him and rushed him to police.

Police warns

Meanwhile, Lilongwe Police Public Relations Officer Kingsley Dandaula has expressed concern with the development warning the people that taking the law into their own hands was a crime.

He also said the development hinders smooth investigations because “these are the people who also give us clues as to where their partners are or where else they have stolen.”

But the community members said they have no trust in police because on several occasions “we have handed over to them suspects but within a few days we have seen them freed and our houses keep on being broken into by the same bandits.”
