Lilongwe Water Board staff suspended over DPP donation story

Lilongwe Water Board (LLB) has suspended two officers, including its public relations officer, on suspicion they are behind the leaking of information that the organisation funded Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) southern region blue night event.

Sonani: Suspended

The  two, revenue accountant Kelvin Lichapa and Public Relations Officer Bright Sonani, were suspended on February 1, 2017 following a Malawi News  story titled ‘DPP ransacking Lilongwe Water Board’ published on January 7-13, 2017.

The story revealed details on how the cash-strapped struggling Lilongwe Water Board was forced to contribute K10 million towards the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) southern region fundraising event.

The organisation made suspicious payments amounting to K4,150,000 to National Intelligence Bureau officers and there were fuel allocations worth K12 million meant for middle managers on paper, yet the funds were diverted.

LLB wrote Lichapa and Sonani that, following an investigation which NIB did to trace how the documents and information leaked, the two are suspended to pave way for investigations.

Lilongwe Water Board chief executive officer Alfonso Chikuni, confirmed  the two are on suspension and an inquiry was underway.

“The article mentioned wrong people. The NIB, who took up the matter and investigated how the information got to the media, gave us a report that it is the two.

“Even though DPP sounds juicy to you journalists, bear in mind that these employees are not on suspension because the story said something about the DPP, there were three issues in that story,” the newspaper quoted Chikuni as saying.

He said LWB has engage Statutory Corporation to handle the case fairly.

” … there were three issues in that story … ”

Why does the article not list the three issues. We can guess that one of them is the donation the ruling party.

Can someone do something about this impunity by DPP? It seems now they want to rule by bringing fear to Malawians. DPP does not seem to change from its old bad habits. Watch out!!
