Lilongwe’s Sungununu crew to launch debut album

If you are a fan of hip-hop music and given a chance to come up with a list of music icons, Sungununu crew would not miss out on the list.

The record of accomplishment for the Lilongwe-based Sungununu crew of Miyambi fame, which started operating in 2006, keeps ascending each day.

The three-member crew, comprising Janta, Gowa and Essim, does hip-hop music in Chichewa – as the Miyambi entails the Malawian culture and the group preferred to be in line with the fans by not sidelining the local language.

“We call our genre Miyambi Hip-Hop because our lyrics are dominated by proverbs,” said Shaibu Mbwana – who is also known as Essim in music circles.

Essim went on to say that the crew has made progress from the time it started operating, and attributed teamwork to their success.

Akuseka, a music video that is enjoying air play on Malawi Broadcasting Corporation Television, is one of the crew’s best-released tracks. After releasing a ten-track mix tape in 2008, Sungununu is now back again promising another mix tape and an album.

“We have been working on an album and a mix tape but we have released six tracks and two music videos from our album and mix tape.”

“The album will be released this year, including the mix tape,” he said enthusiastically.

To complement their music career, the crew recently launched a fashion line known as Miyambi wear.
