LL Golf Club Shankers assist orphanage: Win match-play against Lords
Shankers, a registered grouping of golfers from Lilongwe Golf Club on Sunday, July 16, 2017 donated assorted items worth about K300,000 to Ministry of Hope Crisis Nursery, which takes care of babies as young as one week old.
Before the donation, the Shankers hosted a two-day match-play golf tournament against Lords of the Greens from Blantyre, which ended 22-16 in favour of the hosts.
Speaking when handing over the donation on behalf of the grouping at Lilongwe Golf Club, captain for the Shankers Shephered Tembo said the donated items were bought through contributions from the group’s individual members and other well-wishers.
“We were just fulfilling two of our objectives of improving the standards of golf in the country and assisting the needy. We thank the Lords for accepting our invitation to come for the tournament and for being with us during the handover of the items,” said Tembo.
President of the Lords Andrew Ngomwa commended the Shankers for the kind gesture towards needy children, saying his grouping also believes in sharing with the needy.
Ngomwa presented a K220,000 cheque to the Shankers to cover some of the costs incurred by the grouping in hosting the Lords.
A representative from Crisis Nursery, Catherine Thom hailed the Shankers for the donation, which she said would go a long way in helping the needy babies.
“We keep babies from as young as one week old up to two years, who have been challenged in different ways such as death of their mothers during birth, abandoned babies, those born from mothers with psychiatric conditions and any other baby referred to us.
“We use a lot of milk, porridge as well as baby diapers and all these items have come at an optune time,” said Thom.
