Madonna opens up about how she is Raising Malawi
US pop star Madonna, has told America’s People magazine about her life as a mom, her emotional adoption journey of four Malawian born children — and why she’s dedicated to helping the children of Malawi through her foundation, the Raising Malawi.
The 59-year-old musician adopted the five-year-old girls from a Malawian orphanage as sisters for the two children from the country she is already mother to, David and Mercy, both 11.
The musician told the magazine that she once ‘cried herself to sleep’ after reading headlines accusing her of ‘kidnapping’ her adopted 11-year-old son David from Lilongwe orphanage, Home of Hope, back in 2008.
“In my mind, I was thinking, ‘Wait a minute. I’m trying to save somebody’s life. Why are you all s***ing on me right now?” I did everything by the book. That was a real low point for me,’ the Queen of Pop lamented to People .
‘I’ve had some pretty dark moments, but I’m a survivor…It’s complicated, but it’s so worth it.’
Little David had been battling pneumonia and malaria at the time.
The Raising Malawi founder – who’s also mother to Rocco, 17; and Lourdes, 20 – encountered similar stresses adopting 11-year-old Mercy and orphaned twins Esther and Stella, 5.
In 2009, Madonna adopted Mercy after initially being blocked by Malawian officials, a decision she blames on sexist attitudes towards her after she divorced filmmaker Guy Ritchie.
‘The way I was treated – that sexist behavior – was ridiculous,’ Madonna, , who successfully challenged their refusal in Malawi’s Supreme Court, said .
Madonna also told the magizne that although the twins have settled into her family well, they have no idea she’s a world cerebirity star.
“They don’t have a clue,” she said. “and that’s a good thing. I’m just their mother.”
Estere and Stelle are apparently fans of the soundtracks to animated musical movies Moana and Sing, but were shocked when their mother’s 1983 hit Holiday was played on the radio and David told his new sisters it was her song.
Madonna recently moved her brood to Lisbon, Portugal to enable David to enroll in football club Benfica’s youth academy.

You can say that again we have very rich presidents reverends prophets etc many billionaires but we haven’t adopted even a single child shame! Shame! On us all it makes me wonder which love of Christ are we busy preaching about? If we are failing to show it in action even the bible says faith without action is dead .But look at this woman all the way from the US doing what Jesus told us to do I am so touched May God bless Madonna abundantly you have truely shown us that love sees no colour.
I tell you guyz,,,,,,,, the so called men of God we have here in Malawi those who have acquired alot of wealthy are failing to do what this lady is done …. may the LORD ALMIGHT bless you Madam Madonna you really have that heart of taking care and looking after the poorest. he is just fulfilling what Jesus asked to one of the rich man in the bible, ‘ He was told to get his riches and give it to the poor, but he went away immediately after hearing this’ But here is the woman taking all what she has giving it to the poor and building healthy centres for the poor masses …… I think God is trying to speak something to the rich people!!!
I have supported Raising Malawi from its launch and have never donated to a more worthy cause, which actually delivers. Despite battling certain establishment figures and being subjected to attempted ridicule by the then President no less, who appeared to have her own agenda, true to form Madonna has never given up. Children are always her priority and what a marvellous job she has done so far raising David and Mercy to be wonderful citizens who care deeply about other people , work hard and make the most of every opportunity to be the best version of themselves . They are close as siblings, adore their older siblings and have embraced with joy Estere and Stella their newly adopted twin siblings. Madonna has always walked the walk so I had complete faith in her when she said she was going to make sure the children of Malawi got a paediatric Unit of their own . It’s a wonderful place so deserved also by Dr Borgstein and his team. David’s participation in the dance at the opening celebration and Mercy’s amazing presence and maturity giving her speech , are a testament to Madonna’s ability to parent successfully . I will continue to make donations to Raising Malawi as often as I can and I recommend others not to hesitate in doing the same.
Honestly speaking, I love Madonna like,I don’t know.she has a heart for Malawi and that also makes me to love her more and more and more and moreeeee!!!!!!!!!!
the problem here is if you look all those who were in front trying to block Madam Madonna to adopt those orphanage kids poor kids,all of them are very rich and never come out to adopt or to help one,they wanted Madam Madonna again to adopt there rich children,very very very jealousy selfish people.once again Bravo Madam Madonna through you those kids are happy through you some help is also reaching other kids here,through you we have now a good health peds facility in Blantyre
Shame on evil people who accused her when they cannot dare spend a coin on these children. Devlish people full of envy!
She is a good mum. You can actually see how the boy, David, is spoiled. But at the same time made to work hard to realise a good future
