Mafco throw spanners in Lions’ works: Malawi Super League

Red Lions’ dreams of finishing the TNM Super League first round on top were shattered on Saturday, September 15, 2012 when the soldiers from the old capital city were held 0-0 by their brothers in arms Mafco at Chitowe Stadium.

The Lions were hoping to collect maximum points against against Mafco then Moyale Barracks to topple current league leaders Silver Strikers but the result against the soccer instructors from Salima means they can only manage to finish level with the central bankers should they win against Moyale at the same venue on Sunday.

However, with a massive goal difference of 21 against 7 for the Zomba based soldiers, the bankers can as well start budgeting for the K200,000 prize money for the first round best team.

Red Lions draw in drab soldiers derby

Silver Strikers top the league’s standings with 31 points from 14 games followed by the Lions, who now have 28 points from 13 games.

Before the Mafco, Red Lions’ game, there were fears from other quarters that the former would give away the game to their senior brothers but Mafco coach Stereo Gondwe made it clear before the match that his side badly needed the points, having performed miserably in recent matches.

Following the draw, Mafco have finished their 14 first round assignments with 14 points.

The first round comes to an end tomorrow when Escom takes on Epac at Kalulu Stadium with Big Bullets hosting Kamuzu Barracks at Balaka Stadium. Red Lions date fellow soldiers Moyale at the Chitowe Stadium.
