Malawi army has two deputy commanders
The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Commander General Henry Odilo has now two deputies, Nyasa Times understands.
This comes after government appointed Major General John Msonthi as deputy army commander.
According to inside sources Msonthi will work hand in hand with Lieutenant General Clement Kafuwa who was appointed deputy army commander when General Odillo was made army chief.
The military sources also says Msonthi has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General .
“Msonthi will be responsible for operations while Kafuwa will head the administration. It’s just a way of sharing the workload which the deputy has,” said the source.
Msonthi has worked in embassies in Tanzania and USA as defence attachee. He was MDF’s Director of Personnel before appointed deputy Army General.
This is the first time MDF to have two deputies. It comes after several appointments in the MDF.
According to our source there are now about five Major Generals in the army including Clement Namangale, McBeath Mkandawire and Spoon Phiri.
Odilo took over from General Mark Chiziko whose term of office expired. Chiziko is now heading Malawi’s State Intelligence Agency.
