Malawi athletics body in hot soup over financial mismanagement
Beleaguered Athletics Association Of Malawi (AAM) executive committee is in hot soup over allegations of maladminstration and financial mismanagement.
The development comes hot on the heels of the annual general meeting for the executive committee annulled by Malawi National Council Of Sports over constitutional flaws raised by some of the delegates.
High placed sources at Malawi National Council Of Sports confided in Nyasa Times that a leaked document of financial report has revealed gross mismanagement at the association.
The source, who opted for anonymity, said the report indicated that the association received K23 million and yet the treasurer Irena Luka presented an unaudited report indicating that it got just K6 Million from International Athletics Associations Federation.
The leaked document also indicates that barely a day after the K23 million grant was wired into the association’s account, a whooping K10 million was withdrawn and it remains to be seen how the money was used.
MeanwhileN Sports Council has written a strong letter demanding a crystal clear explanation on the serious financial mismanagement before elections for new office bearers slated for February 28.
Sports Council has also demanded a comprehensive audited accounts for the entire four year term since they took office.
The committe comprises Godfrey Phiri as President with Senti Banda Vice President, Frank Chitembeya as general secretary and Irena Luka Treasurer.
