Malawi Auditor General Kampanje forced to retire

President Joyce Banda has accepted an earlier retirement application by Malawi’s Auditor General Reckford Kampanje whose supreme audit institution the National Audit Office (NAO) has been smeared with allegations of donor funds mismanagement.

Kampanje is one of the country’s most decorated senior civil servant who has had untainted track record until a disagreement over shift of agreed policies with some donors pouring funds into the NAO arouse a year ago.

In a statement read on MBCtv from the Office of the President and Cabinet, President Banda accepted Kampanje’s letter to request for all leave days pending his retirement this year end.

Reckford Kampanje: Early retirement

Kampanje’s decision has been described by many professionals as “rare for Malawi” since most cases high ranking government officials waited to be shown the door.

“We saw the NAO trying to correct the misconceptions in the media last week when the issue was brought on public domain. The NAO, I think was trying to bring the actual truth out rather than defending itself. But the wrong was already made in the execution of the initial project two
years ago so someone had to take the blame, and Kampanje did,” said one executive.

Commentators have now urged other executive managers in NAO to do the same saying an institution of high integrity whose image was spruced up in the past one year should not be ridiculed anymore.

“NAO has enjoyed high profile image building, donors and Malawian citizens are abreast with its work day in day out a stance that the taxpayers have wanted for a long time, but scandal of donor pull out due to bad finance management could plunge its image further into the abyss,” said one social commentator.
