Malawi baby with ‘harlequin ichthyosis’ dies

A Salima baby who was born last week with strange features , the first ever case to be reported in Malaw idied at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Lilongwe.

Doctors at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH)  said the baby was born with “harlequin ichthyosis.”

KCH Director Nordeen Alide confirmed that the baby died last Saturday.

“The baby came here from Salima District Hospital on Friday but sadly the baby passed away on Saturday,” Alide said.

The mother, Jamila Mandula, 23, said she was devasted with the death.

State-run MBC/TV  were the first to report in its news bulletin Wednesday night about the baby.
