Malawi basketball body elects new committee

Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) has a new committee following low key elections held on the sidelines of an Annual General Meeting held at Malawi National Council of Sports on Saturday.

Hamlet Kamtengeni Southern Zone Basket Association (Sozobal) Chaiperson was elected president unopposed.

Central Zone Basket Association (Cezobal) chairperson Khama Mphepo was elected for the position of Vice-President with Edger Ng’ong’olo for the position of General Secretary.

Kamtengeni, Mphepo and Ng’ong’olo were elected unopposed because they were the only nominees for their respective positions.

The elections saw Lusungu Banda, who was the Vice-General Secretary in the previous committee, was elected treasurer with 11 against 5 votes over her challenger Thoko Kamwanjira.

Banthali Banda succeeded Lusungu Banda, the only female member in the committee on the position of Vice-General Secretary after winning 14 his challenger Yami Jere.

George Phiriwas elected as executive member after the first round of voting and Obert Nyirongo retained his position only after second of voting against Chris Dzikolidaya and Lusubiro Mwangonde.

Mphepo said in his acceptance speech that the committee would strive to unify the three zonal associations in the country.

“What we want to do is unification of basketball. There has been a lot of divisions among basketball itself and being a sport for the community we can’t allow that,” Mphepo said.

Mphepo downplayed the election of most members unopposed.

“This is fine because it shows that people were satisfied with those who were nominated for the positions.”

Malawi National Council of Sports Executive Secretary George Jana applauded Basmal for electing the new committee.

Jana appealed for people to support the new members for them to able to effectively run the body.

He advised the association to make the best of Malawi National Council of Sports for support.

“We may not have every solution to your problem but certainly my door is open,” Jana said. “You can come without pressing an appointment.”

The elections come after administration flaws rocking the association.
