Malawi can still hire expatriate coach, says FAM President
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Mac Millan Walter Nyamilandu said despite government advising the body to employ a local coach due to inadequate funds, they have received more applications from overseas and some looks enticing therefore they are “still consulting” with the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports on possibility to hire foreign coach.
Nyamilandu said a final decision will be made at FAM executive committee meeting scheduled for next weekend, stressing that “the door is not completely closed for an expatriate.”
Currently, the Flames coaching post remain vacant following Young Chimodzi’s dismissal last month and Ernest Mtawari was appointed by FAM as temporary coach for the flames.
Nyamilandu said a “short-listing exercise” of both international and local applications will be done next week.
Football pundits however says Malawi should that believing in local coaches and invest much in developing talents from the grass roots.
The new coach will be named by 1 August, according to FAM general secretary, Sugzo Nyirenda, and will have his first assignment a month later.
“The new flames mentor will be known by the first of August and will have one month to prepare for his first assignment with the Malawi national football team and we know that is enough time for one to prepare,” said Nyirenda.
“We want a coach who will be bringing results not excuse that is why we are looking for someone who has experience either by coaching at a club level or national teams,” he added.
The new coach will be responsible for the players call ups, administering of training s well as following up both local and international players how they are faring in their respective clubs, according to FAM.

The issue is not the coach but motivate the players.

I think its not good to bring a foreign coach as of now cause AFCON is already in progress its better to employ local coach because he will be familiar with the players while a foreign coach will take time to get settled as a result we we not qualify.
