But in 1976 a conflict arose between the church and the government of dictator Kamuzu Banda where he was forced into exile.

The church was accused of “forming clandestine subversive groups” which were working against the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) dictatorship.

When he returned to Malawi, he worked as a rector  at Kachebere Seminary and also taught at University of Malawi’s Chancellor College.

Kalilombe obtained a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley .
