Malawi coach names local based players for Cosafa Cup
Malawi national football team has named a squad for Cosafa Cup scheduled for Zambia from July 6-20.
Coach Eddingtone Ng’onamo has included veterans Fisher Kondowe and Davie Banda, together with an exciting mix of young rising stars in the Malawi game.
Rodrick Gonani is another experienced striker, who has been on and off the team while others faces include Silver Strikers captain Lucky Malata, midfielders Patrick Gunde (Civo United) and Junior Chimodzi (Silver Stars).
He has kept faith in both goalkeepers Owen Chaima and Charles Swini, who have come under fire for inconsistent performance for the Flames but left out Mighty Wanderers goalie Richard Chipuwa, who is in top form.
Chaima let his team down against Zimbabwe in a friendly match while Swini was held responsible for a poor performance against Kenya in the World Cup in which he conceded two goals for Malawi to be held at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.
Malawi have been given a bye into the quarterfinals of the Cosafa Cup Zambia 2013, where they will face holders Zimbabwe.
The Flames’ best finish in the competition is the runner-up places they secured in 2002 and 2003, losing to South Africa and Zimbabwe respectively in the finals.
