A Malawi College of Accountancy lecturer, Dr. Auxius Kazombo Mwale was on Sunday arrested by Fiscal and Fraud Police Unit (FFU) in Lilongwe in for allegedly being in cashgate scandal.

National Fiscal and Fraud Police deputy head, Senior Superintendent Gerald Kachiwanda could not deny or confirm the arrest when contacted.

”Just know that there are many cashgate cases and we will pursue them all”.

Mwale’s arrest came just a day after former Budget Director Paul Mphwiyo was arrested by FFU police in connection to his alleged involvement in the cashgate scandal.

Mphwiyo is accused of siphoning over K3 billion of public funds from Capitol Hill in Lilongwe.

Mphwiyo’s arrest comes three months after he was fingered out as the mastermind of the theft and money laundering of public funds amounting to K20 billion.

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Mary Kachale in August told High Court in Lilongwe that Mphwiyo was the main architect of the scandal that forced the country’s main donors to pull out.

And cashgate convict, Leonard Kalonga, former assistant director of tourism at Ministry of Tourism also named Mphwiyo as the brain behind the looting of public funds at the Capital Hill.

In 2013, the shooting of former Ministry of Finance budget director Paul Mphwiyo led to revelations of the plunder of public resources at Capital Hill.

Former president Joyce Banda ordered an audit which British forensic auditor, Baker Tilly, undertook between April and September 2013 which established that about K24 billion was siphoned from public coffers through dubious payments, inflated invoices and goods or services never rendered.

In May this year, a financial analysis report by audit and business advisory firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) also established that about K577 billion in public funds could not be reconciliated between 2009 and December 31 2014.
