Malawi cop arrested for demanding bribes at illegal roadblock

A Malawian Police officer has been arrested in the central region district of  Dedza  for  erecting an illegal roadblock  in his home village and extorting money  from impoverished communities.

Arrested cop for illegal roadblock

The officer, constable Mdala, whose number is B5745,  was found collecting money unlawfully from people in his home area at Lobi, Traditional Authority Kachere in Dedza.

Mdala was earlier granted leave and he went to his home village to spend the holiday.

While in the village, he put on his police uniform, mounted a fake roadblock and started soliciting bribes from people.

Community members became suspicious of Mdala’s conduct and they tipped the police who went to the illegal roadblock in plain clothes and caught him red handed.

Inspector General of Police Lexon Kachama said Malawi Police Services   will not condone crime.

“ If the officer is culpable let him face the law,” he said.

He is not alone in these criminal acts. Police officers on border patrol duties do the same at Mikondo village in traditional authority Kachere in Dedza. This is the road from Njonja(Chimoto) trading centre to Ndevu village to Magomero trading centre to Mitundu in Lilongwe. They use guns and uniform to intimidate village road users.

A Nyasatimes Times, please choose better words, you have to write as Malawians not like foreigners. You cannot say, he was collecting money from impoverished community. This is too much. You have to have respect for the people. They may be poor but they deserve respect.
