Malawi cop jailed for stealing laptop

Liwonde First Grade Magistrate Court over the weekend sentenced Constable Rogers Kalambo of Liwonde Police Post to two years imprisonment after being found guilty of stealing a Dell laptop computer from George Mussa of Blantyre based, Bilter Business Center.

The court heard that Kalambo stole the laptop on October 10, 20112 at Liwonde Road Block Where he was on duty.

Mussa was travelling in a bus which stopped for police check at the Liwonde Road Block, according to police.

The Police told the court that Mussa discovered that his laptop was missing and reported the matter to the police who conducted an investigation which led to the recovery of the laptop at a computer service shop where it was discovered that Kalambo had taken it there for unlocking.justice

Constable Kalambo, Number BO 485, pleaded not guilty during the first hearing in October last year to charges of theft by public servant and abuse of office.

After cross examination, the Liwonde First Grade Magistrate court found him guilty and convicted him for theft accordingly.

In mitigation for leniency, Kalambo said he has a wife and parents to look after.

First Grade Magistrate, Jones Masula deplored Kalambo’s conduct saying it was not for a law enforcing personnel to steal.

He sentenced him to two years imprisonment with hard labour.
